Major international credit cards are widely accepted in restaurants and shops or when booking tours and the like. You can also use credit cards at ATMs to withdraw cash. According to an article in The Sydney Morning Herald in November 2006, there are more than 13 million credit cards in Australia. Sydney (89%) and Melbourne (87.6%) are right behind Hong Kong (91.7%) and Seoul (89.4%) in terms of credit card ownership, according to a survey of Asia Pacific by Synovate PAX. Respondents in Sydney billed an average of US$1,650 per month on their credit card.
