General Information » Money » Banks

There are four big banks in Australia, which have branches across Sydney and the rest of the country. These are Westpac, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ), and the National Australia Bank. These have solid representation overseas.

There are a number of other state, regional and city banks and numerous overseas operations. As everywhere, electronic banking is becoming more common, which has reduced the number of branches. Instead, banks tend to offer automated bill payment (BPAY), dial-up services, ATMs, electronic funds transfer, internet banking, smart cards, telephone banking and touch-screen customer service terminals. Some also have currency exchange desks in branches. Banks are generally open from 09:30 to 16:00 Monday to Thursday, and on Friday from 09:30 to 17:00.
