General Information » Getting Around » Taxi

Sydney taxis are strictly controlled. Cabbies are licensed and cars are inspected regularly. Taxis are metered, limousines are not. Most cabs take EFTPOS and credit cards but you can save around 10% by paying cash. In the CBD it is generally easier to hail a taxi than call one. Look for a cab with the orange light on and raise your arm. You can call a cab (see table - a charge of $1.50 is payable) or you can find ranks at railway stations, major shopping centres, outside big hotels and at Chalmers Street, Chifley Square and Park Street.

Changeover is at 03:00 and 15:00 and you may find it more difficult to get a cab at these times. Drivers are allowed to refuse fares as they head back to base. Rates in urban areas are set at $1.68 per kilometre, on top of a $2.90 initial charge. Waiting time is set at 72.17 cents per minute. Luggage charges should never exceed 55 cents. Maxi cabs, for six or more passengers, can charge up to 150% of these fares. Passengers in all taxis are liable for any toll fees.
