Sydney is generally safe for women travellers but common sense should prevail. Don’t walk alone late at night; do stay alert if you find yourself in a deserted area. Unfortunately Rohypnol and the like have made it to these shores too, so don’t leave your drink unattended in bars or clubs. If you travel by train at night, keep in the Nightsafe areas on the platforms and travel near the guard’s van on the train itself (this is marked with a blue light). Nightsafe trains operate after 20:00 in the city and 19:00 in the suburbs. These only open the two carriages nearest the guard to passengers. NightRide buses replace trains from midnight. Taxis are generally safe for women on their own, as are buses. Sit near the bus driver if possible.
