Australian medical services are excellent, but they can be expensive for the uninsured. Even those entitled to free healthcare under reciprocal agreements will have restricted access to Australia’s public health insurance system. Repatriation, evacuation, ambulance, dental and physio costs are generally not covered. A medical evacuation from Australia to the UK would cost up to $50,000. Extra insurance should be considered essential, at least until you have secured full Medicare cover (for more on this, turn to p.117).
