The New South Wales Police is Australia’s oldest and largest police organisation, with 15,000 officers and more than 500 stations. It is the main law enforcement agency in New South Wales and has far more power than state police forces in other federal countries like the US or Canada. There are three major divisions: field operations, specialist operations and corporate services. All police carry guns. Specialist operations include a mounted unit for crowd control, a rescue unit with an excellent reputation, a marine unit and a highway patrol. The New South Wales police are also the public face of road safety. They are easily recognised by the blue and white chequered band on their cars. The uniform is quite paramilitary in style, with navy blue cargo pants and baseball cap, a light blue shirt and a leather jacket for winter.
