General Information » Places To Stay » Campsites

Campers have a choice of five parks on the mainland where overnight camping is permitted, all located on or close to the beach. As a form of backpacker’s accommodation, camping is discouraged, with the parks being promoted more for overnight trips and a modest form of getting away from the urban jungle. On weekends, no permit is necessary, but weekday camping is allowed only in designated areas of these parks and a permit is required, issued daily and on the spot by park rangers patrolling the area (some form of personal identification is needed). Campers are only allowed to stay a maximum of three consecutive week nights.

Facilities for camping are limited: barbeque pits (which you need to book separately), toilets and showers. For washing, you need to bring your own water or use water from the toilet/showers.

For more information and enquiries about camping in these parks you can either call the National Parks Board (1800 471 7300), who manage all Singapore’s parks, or check out their website which has all the information you’ll need to know before you go; www.nparks.gov.sg. Barbeque pits can only be booked via AXS machines located in many places: see www.axs.com.sg.

The camping policy on Pulau Ubin (map 8-C2), an isle north of the main island, is more liberal; you can camp anywhere without a permit. For more information on this island and what there is to do there, see p.XXX.
