General Information » Getting Around » Walking

Singapore’s equatorial climate – with frequent rain, average daytime temperatures of around 32°C and a mean relative humidity of 84% – can make walking for any length of time rather uncomfortable. Perspire you will. The singlet (vest) is commonly worn by executives wishing to avoid the ‘wet look’ at business meetings. Also, everyone owns an umbrella or two.

That said, Singapore is very pedestrian friendly, particularly around popular shopping and tourist areas. There are footpaths alongside most roads and pedestrian crossings or footbridges are suitably placed for safety. In fact, it’s against the law to jaywalk and you must use bridges or crossings, or cross at a traffic light. Car drivers are generally mindful of pedestrians, or at least, the severe repercussions should they knock one down! When crossing a road, it’s incumbent on the pedestrian to look out for cars – don’t just assume that they will stop at a pedestrian crossing for you.
