General Information » Getting Around » Underground

The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is Singapore’s equivalent to the London Underground or New York’s subway. It’s an excellent way to get around: modern, safe, reliable, air-conditioned, fast and inexpensive ($0.80-1.70). Operating hours are from 05:30-00:30 (but vary slightly between stations), and while it can get crowded during peak hours, train frequencies are adjusted accordingly and you can expect another train to arrive in just three to eight minutes.

Single trip tickets valid for a day can be purchased from vending machines in every station. A $1 deposit for the smart card is automatically deducted and refunded via the vending machines. Remember to collect your deposit when you reach your destination.

Three main lines span the island, and feeder services by the bus network and LRT system (Light Rail Transport) make it even easier to get to an MRT station. For regular commuting, buy an ezLink fare card ($15) which works seamlessly between the three transport systems. It is available at all stations. For further information on the MRT, visit www.smrt.com.sg.
