General Information » Facts & Figures » National Flag

Singapore acquired its flag in 1959 when it was accorded self-government. The flag has two horizontal halves, red above white. The red signifies universal brotherhood and equality, with the white symbolising purity and virtue. In the upper left corner, a white crescent moon and five white stars form a circle. The crescent moon denotes a young nation on the rise and the five stars represents democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. The flag is treated with utmost respect by residents and there are strict laws against defiling it. During National Day, many buildings and residential flats can be seen proudly flying the flag.
