Singapore is about as safe as it gets in the world for a woman to move around alone day or night. Most long-time residents don’t think twice about going out alone and take this safety for granted. There is, however, no substitute for common sense. Avoid taking a short cut through a construction site at night or using unlit paths in deserted areas. If you are being harassed or threatened, scream for help; chances are someone will aid you by calling the police – almost everyone has a mobile phone. If you must take a taxi to a really remote destination, let the driver hear you telling someone the taxi’s licence number (it’s visible inside the cab) on your mobile phone. The penalties for sexual harassment and molestation act as successful deterrents. When entering a mosque, your arms and legs should be covered.
