Remember to keep a copy of all important documents in a safety deposit box (or with a trusted relative) in your home country. You should also keep a copy of your passport with you at all times. Other essential documents include:

• Passport photos (if you forget, don't worry - most Chinese metro stops have cheap photo booths).

• Entry visa.

• Original (or copy) of college/university diploma (needed for work visa application).

• Birth and marriage certificates of your family members to process visa applications.

• Children's school records.

• Inventory of everything packed, shipped, or put in storage back home.

• Insurance papers.

• Bank codes for transferring money back to home accounts.

• Medical prescriptions.

• Pet's health certificate and vaccination forms.
