Residents » Certificates & Licences » Driving Licence

Few expats drive around the city, but having a licence can afford you a sense of independence that taxis can’t match, especially for exploring beyond city limits. In order to get a licence in Shanghai you must be at least 18 years old and have a residence permit. If you have a valid licence from your home country then you can easily convert it. Otherwise, you will have to enrol in a local driving school and take a test. Whenever you’re on the road remember to keep your driving licence on you. If you’re stopped for a violation and you don’t have your licence with you, then it will be suspended. Driving licence requirements can change, so check with the Shanghai Traffic Authority (6498 7070) for up-to-date information.
