Cash is still the primary method of payment in Shanghai, although debit cards issued by domestic banks are accepted in most of the larger retailers and restaurants. All high-end hotels, most internationally operating travel agencies and an increasing number of well-established, brand-name shops and even cafes such as Starbucks are now taking both international and domestic cards with Visa and MasterCard logos. Occasionally luxury hotels will take payment in US dollars but in general only local Chinese currency is accepted in Shanghai.
