Although most Chinese people don’t mind having their photo taken, it’s always best to ask before doing so. Even in touristy areas, locals rarely ask for cash in exchange for a snapshot; a quick showing of their image in the digital viewer will often suffice. Airports are off limits for photography, although photos taken from inside the terminal are unlikely to be reprimanded. Photographing any military installations is strictly forbidden and can result in plenty of hassle, and cameras are not welcomed during public disturbances of any sort. Temples often charge for taking pictures inside and it’s customary to refrain from doing so while services are in progress. Street scenes are usually fair game for the photographer unless a police officer is blatantly the central subject matter.
