From 60-plus storey skyscrapers and futuristic developments to thriving street markets in old-fashined lanes, Shanghai is one of the most exciting cities in the world, hurtling into the 21st Century at breakneck pace.

Labels have been stuck on Shanghai since it came into existence: Paris of the East, the Orient’s ‘whore’ as well as its ‘pearl’, but those who actually visit it will discover a city that ignores and confounds these stereotypes. It is not just one thing, but many things: both a frontier and a fantasyland; meticulously planned yet unnervingly chaotic; a sophisticated banquet and an appalling stew.

Arriving in Shanghai is like stepping onto the filmset of Bladerunner. Mega-skyscrapers soar from the skyline and pulsing neon lights mirror the energy of a city that would prefer not to sleep. Yet most of the city’s 20 million inhabitants live behind this shiny façade, in the city’s older parts, where adventurous travellers can catch a glimpse of a more traditional Chinese way of life.

For hedonistic visitors there are bars and clubs as decadent as any in the world, all packed to the rafters with locals and expats. Culture junkies can save their energy for the city’s art districts or recharge their batteries in some of Shanghai’s many Taoist and Buddhist temples. And for those with an interest in Shanghai’s colourful history, there are plenty of world-class museums to explore.
