General Information » Essential Info » What To Wear

Qatar is not as strict as some of its neighbours in the region, but expatriate visitors and residents should still show respect for the local customs and sensibilities. Women are not required to cover their hair, but should avoid tight or revealing clothing. When out in public, both men and women should wear garments that cover the shoulders and knees, as vests, shorts, and short skirts are not really appropriate. It’s fine to wear shorts at a sports club, and swimming costumes are perfectly acceptable at the swimming pools and beaches (although women should never sunbathe topless).

Perhaps most importantly, you should cover up in the strong summer sun. Hats and sunscreen are a must and it is not uncommon to see people carrying umbrellas to act as parasols!

Shopping malls, restaurants and cinemas can be a little cold due to the air conditioning, so it’s worth taking along a sweater or cardigan.
