You’re not the only person who wants to live in Paris. Immigrants come by the thousands every month – both legally and illegally. France’s new right-wing president Nicolas Sarkozy, who won the election on a ‘tough on immigration’ platform, has promised to make it far more difficult for foreigners to live and work here. The easiest most painless way to move to France is to be hired from abroad. Most employers will provide a full relocation package however, with our without an employer’s support the level of bureaucracy in France will make the process of becoming and staying legal a frustrating one. Find comfort in knowing that the French are as frustrated by it as you are. Know what they know; arrive prepared for any request – passport photos, rent notices, electricity bills, marriage certificates, bank statements, and on and on. Have it all in hand before you get in the queue.
