General Information » Money » Tipping

The French have a bad reputation as stingy tippers when travelling but it's not their fault. In France, service industry workers don't expect large tips, and many don't expect anything at all, so no one’s accustomed to giving large pourboires. In most places, such as restaurants, service charges are included in the price. Leave change – no more than a couple of euros – for waiters, taxi drivers, and hair stylists. In fancy restaurants and hotels where an international clientele is common, tipping is more frequent and larger, but it is not common to add a tip on a credit card payment.
