Nearly all Parisian restaurants and shops accept electronic payment, though some smaller groceries and bakeries will demand cash. All Parisians carry bank debit cards (known as cartes bancaires) with small electronic chips embedded in them, known as puces. The chip is a security measure to ensure stolen cards can’t be used, as it requires the entry of a PIN, with no signature required. Don't worry if you don’t have a card with a chip, cashiers will simply swipe your card the old-fashioned way, then ask you for a signature.
