General Information » Getting Around » Metro

With nearly 300 stations, the metro’s 14 lines along with its five express (RER) lines, serve 4.5 million people per day and 62 stations connect to at least one other line. The largest underground station in the world is Paris’ Châtelet–Les Halles.

The familiar, violet ‘t’ tickets were phased out in July 2007, replaced by white ‘t+’ tickets, which sell for €1.50 and are also valid on buses and trams. A better deal is a carnet, ten tickets for €11.10. In addition, monthly passes, known as Pass Navigo cards, afford unlimited trips within Paris for €53.50. Stations open at 05:30 and close at 01:00, except Saturday nights, when they stay open an extra hour. During peak times, there is never a wait of more than a couple of minutes. Digital clocks in most stations indicate waiting times.

RER times are posted on video screens and on poster boards in the station. Make sure to look at the electronic boards on RER platforms, which indicate which stops the train will make. Additionally, whereas upon exiting the metro system you need not re-enter your ticket in the automated slots, RER lines require ticket verification upon entry and exit.
