France’s Fifth Republic was established by the constitution of 1958. The president is the head of the Republic, governing in accord with a bicameral legislature. While regional and local governments exist, the constitution guarantees all French live under the same law, citing the ideals of Liberté, Egalité, and Fraternité, which trace back to the Revolution.
