General Information » Facts & Figures » Electricity & Water

Electricity and water services are provided by the Omani government, although there are plans to privatise them eventually. The electricity supply is 220/240 volts and 50 cycles and there are few shortages or stoppages. The socket type is the three-pin British system.

The mains tap water is purified eight times and is fine to drink but can taste chlorinated. Locally bottled mineral or desalinated water is a cheap alternative and there are many brands available. Bottled water is usually served in hotels and restaurants – make sure the seal on the bottle is unbroken.
