Stunning landscapes and magical waters make Oman one of the Gulf’s best kept secrets

Nestled in the south eastern quarter of the Arabian Peninsula, with a land area of 300,000 square kilometres, the Sultanate of Oman is phenomenally diverse. With incredible geography made up of mountains and wadis, bustling city centres and serene beaches, pure waters and luxurious shores, Oman has something for everyone.
The city centres are devoid of skyscrapers, giving it an old-world charm. Stout, pretty, white-washed buildings sit alongside ornate mosques and, in Muscat in particular, you’ll see many places have a golden glow thanks to a gilt-inspired architectural style that is resplendant of an otherworldly wealth. Oman is a country that is proud of its ancestry and age-old traditions and you’ll be pleased to discover that its not lacking in cultural attractions. Get out and about and explore its numerous forts, ancient cities, museums and souks or take in the excitement of the camel races.
Once off the beaten track, the country’s flora and fauna is equally appealing and counts over 1,200 native plant species, including its native frankincense tree (Boswelia sacra). Look out for the wonderfully wide variety of indigenous wildlife, including many endangered species such as the Arabian Oryx, Arabian leopard, Arabian tahr (a mountain goat now only found in Oman), and humpback whale. Its waters are home to over 150 species of commercial shell and non-shell fish, 21 species of whales and dolphins There are four breeds of sea turtle that come ashore to lay their eggs. You can see this firsthand through various reservation groups, just remember to keep your distance and avoid using flash when taking photos.
Oman is unique perhaps in that every corner of the country has something special to offer. Adventure seekers will enjoy activities like desert driving, wadi bashing, diving and trekking and even if you're not keen to get active, the stunning natural beauty of the place should be enough to keep you entertained. Though much of the country is barren desert, a quick bout of rain quickly brings out the wild flowers. Coconut, banana and other tropical fruit trees thrive in the Salalah climate in the south whereas up north, lagoons and fjords offer a completely different perspective.
Once you finally stop to catch your breath, you’ll find the locals warm and welcoming and restaurants serving up excellent fish, meat and vegetarian options, inspired by both local and international cuisine. All in all, Oman really does have the best of everything.
