Your passport will be your most valuable possession when you first arrive in New Zealand – you will constantly be asked for it as proof of identification. Make sure you have multiple copies (and other photo ID) and get them signed by a lawyer or Justice of the Peace, who will attest that they are genuine. Also, get copies made of your birth and marriage certificates, and anything that relates to your children.

Very soon after arrival, you’ll find yourself needing documents that show your address in New Zealand, such as utility bills, bank statements or tenancy agreements. Keep a record of your IRD number because your employer and your bank will want it for tax purposes. Take plenty of passport photos and keep them with you. You never know when you might need one.
