Getting a driving licence is relatively straightforward and should be made a priority if you intend to stay in New Zealand longer than 12 months. You are legally able to drive on your overseas licence when you first arrive. Before 12 months has elapsed you need to apply for a New Zealand licence. You will have to pass a theory test and, depending on the country you are from, may also be required to pass a practical test. You need to carry your driver’s licence with you at all times. If you are stopped by the police while driving and not able to produce a licence, you can be fined. Normally, they give you 24 hours to take it into the nearest police station as proof. The legal age to start driving in New Zealand is 15. There are three types of licences: learner, restricted and full. You can apply for your licence at www.landtransport.govt.nz.
