The motel is a Kiwi institution, loved equally by businessmen on the road and families travelling en masse. They are usually located just out of town on main routes, are functional rather than fabulous, but make up for what they lack in character with good facilities. Most units come fully equipped with towels, bed linen, a full kitchen and TV (usually with satellite or cable). Expect to pay from $80 for a studio or from $90 for a one-bedroom unit. Family suites can sleep up to six or eight, and are usually charged at the same basic rate as one-bedroom, with an additional cost of $10 to $20 per extra person.
