General Information » Getting Around » Bicycle

Only around 3% of the population uses a bicycle for its daily commute. In the major cities, good roads and a generally light traffic flow (except in certain parts of Auckland) make cycling relatively straightforward. Dedicated cycle lanes, however, are thin on the ground. In Auckland, a cycle route can be found on part of the north-western motorway extension, along Tamaki Drive and in city centre suburbs such as Mt Albert.

Wellington offers a number of shared footpaths (such as those along Oriental Parade and the Mt Victoria Tunnel) and dedicated lanes in the city centre, including one around the busy train station on Bunny Street.

Christchurch is probably the most cycling-friendly city. Not only is it largely flat, with a large number of dedicated cycle lanes, but the police and local council are committed to increasing the number of cyclists on the roads and keeping them safe under its ‘Share the Road’ campaign.

All cyclists are required by law to wear a helmet, and for good reason. While most of New Zealand’s main roads are sealed and in good condition, minor roads are often unsealed, pot-holed or ‘metal’ (composed of a loose cover of small stones with a shifting surface that can be difficult to navigate).

Cycle touring is becoming an increasingly popular way to see the country. Whether you opt for a one-day hire to get around a town or city or sign up for a two-week adventure tour across one of the islands (such as those offered by www.cycletours.co.nz), the mild climate, fine scenery and relatively short distances between destinations make travelling on two wheels a pleasant way to get around. For the adventurous, dedicated mountain-biking trails are plentiful. See www.tourism.net.nz (follow the link through attractions and activities).
