New Zealand’s press is an oddly disjointed affair, heavy on local, regional newspapers but currently producing only one national broadsheet, The Sunday Star Times, which hits shelves once a week. As a result, you can feel oddly removed from other parts of the country at times.

The main newspapers in each of the three main cities feature a good enough selection of national news, but only cursory and syndicated international updates.

The New Zealand Herald($1.50 Monday - Saturday, $2.00 Sunday), the country’s only seven-day publication, is produced in Auckland and readily available throughout most of the North Island.

Much of the printed press is now owned by Australian media company, Fairfax, including The Press, Christchurch’s main daily ($1.10, weekdays, $2.00 Saturday), available across the South Island, and Wellington’s The Dominion ($1.10 weekdays, $1.80 Saturday), available through much of the southern centre of the north island.

The Sunday Star Times (awarded best Weekly Newspaper and Best Weekly Magazine in Qantas Media Awards 2007), while based in Auckland, also has news bureaus in Wellington and Christchurch. New Zealand doesn’t really do tabloids in the UK sense, but The Sunday News ($1.50) is as close as it gets.

The weekend papers are also the best for local listings. Alternatively, pick up a copy of The Listener, New Zealand’s only nationwide current affairs and listings magazine. It costs $3.80 and is published on Saturdays.

Newspapers and magazines are available to buy from newsagents (such as the Magazino chain), dairies, service stations and all major bus and train stations.

A good selection of international newspapers and magazines (mostly in English) is available and Australian publications arrive in New Zealand at pretty much the same time as they’re available across the Tasman. For magazines from further afield, however, it can be six weeks to three months from the original publication date before they arrive in New Zealand -unless you’re willing to part with as much as $15 to have a UK title delivered earlier.
