New Zealand is proud of its continuous efforts to grow, change and adapt. Plans are in place across both Islands to improve what is already available to tourists, as well as to encourage new developments.

In 2011, New Zealand will host the Rugby World Cup. Auckland’s most famous sports ground, Eden Park, is in line for a $385 million makeover before hosting the final. Auckland Art Gallery is preparing to undergo a $90 million redevelopment that will result in 50% more exhibition space and better access for visitors. The historic 19th century building itself is being made earthquake-proof. Work is due to be completed by 2009.

There are plans to build a second Auckland International Airport at Whenuapai Air Base. Passenger numbers are growing at the existing airport by 4% a year and it’s hoped that a second airport will help ease traffic flow, both on the air and on the ground. www.auckland-airport.co.nz

In a bid to become the ‘Hollywood of the South Pacific’, Waitakere City Council is developing a purpose-built soundstage (due to be the largest in New Zealand) on the site of existing Henderson Valley Studios.

In 2006, the World Rally Championships were extended to New Zealand as part of a three-year deal. The new leg, which takes place in Hamilton, is estimated to be worth around $12 million in revenue.

Wellington-based Weta Workshop, the team behind the special effects in The Lord of the Rings is working with The Dinosaurs Aotearoa Museums Trust to develop the models for a $30 million dinosaur park and museum at an, as yet, undisclosed location on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Nelson Theatre Royal, built in 1878 and the oldest functioning wooden theatre in Australasia, is undergoing a $4.5 million renovation project. The work is due for completion in August 2008.

A $200 million development is underway to upgrade Christchurch Airport, where work on the car park has already been completed. The next stage, due for completion in 2009, is a development of a dedicated precinct containing bars, restaurants and cafes, along with a large retail development.
