General Information » Places To Stay » Hotels

New York City certainly has its fair share of hotels. Most are in Manhattan, but it's just as easy, and usually much, much cheaper, to venture out into the boroughs. Certain neighbourhoods, like the theatre district and Times Square, tend to be cluttered. Expect to fork out a handsome sum for the more upscale hotels, and if you’re adamant on staying in Manhattan, you'll find some fairly outrageous prices where the service and standards just don't seem to match. Just because you are paying a lot doesn’t mean you are guaranteed luxury or even hygiene. Some places are poorly managed and unfortunately, due to high demand, there is no real incentive for these places to clean up their acts - with plane-loads of tourists arriving by the hour, these places know that they will always be busy, so why bother striving for excellence? If you do find yourself in a sorry hotel situation, speak up and don't settle for sub-standard accommodation.

However, there are also some real gems to look out for. Some of the more quirky boutique hotels (such as the Gershwin, p.xxx) double up as art galleries, so you can soak up some alternative culture while you're staying there. And even if you can't afford the penthouse at the W (p.xxx), you can still get dressed up and have a drink at their ultra-hip, super cool lounge bar.

For a basic bed and breakfast you're looking at around $150 per night - this can go up to $750 and well beyond if you are looking for real luxury. Some hotels have amenities straight out of a Hollywood fantasy, like in-room massage, chefs that will come to your room to prepare dinner, and free club entries.

One way to try getting more luxury for your dollar is to log onto travel deal websites like www.expedia.com or www.lastminute.com, where you can sometimes get fancy hotels at bargain prices (you have to have luck on your side though).

The gentrified neighbourhoods of Harlem, Brooklyn and Queens have some cheaper alternatives, and with some amazing art, culture and history – and these areas are also sometimes even more interesting than Manhattan.
