Cash may be king, but New York is one of the shopping capitals of the world, and as long as you can pay, you can pay any which way you like. Only a handful of smaller shops or market stalls won’t accept cards, so it pays to keep a stash of cash on you, just in case. Some hotels require a credit card as guarantee, even if you intend to settle your final bill with cash. Nearly all restaurants accept cash or card, and you can even buy your subway Metrocard using your credit card.

Cheques and travellers’ cheques are a bit more tricky - you won’t find many places that accept cheques without asking questions, and travellers’ cheques need to be converted, which can be time consuming. New York is one of the most international cities in the world, but don’t go thinking that means your foreign currency is welcome - if you are paying cash then you’ll need good old American dollars.
