General Information » Getting Around » Bicycle

Over 100,000 New Yorkers travel around on two wheels every day, and it’s a growing trend. Not only do you get to skip the traffic jams, but you can pat yourself on the back for being kind to the environment at the same time. There are around a hundred bike lanes throughout the city, with more on the cards. Cyclists can be fairly aggressive, especially if you are strolling along in a bike lane - but you can’t blame them, given the hair-raising traffic conditions they take on every day.

Once you’re brave enough to face cycling through the traffic, remember the following rules: stick to the right hand side of traffic, stick to bike lanes where they exist, watch out for parked-car doors opening suddenly, and never jump a red light (or try to make it on amber). You’re going to want to make yourself visible so do whatever it takes - bright clothing, reflective neon body vests, bells, whistles... don’t be shy.

You are allowed to take your bike on the subway, but only during off-peak hours and from stations where there is a gate (rather than just a turnstile). You can also take your bike on the Staten Island Ferry, but only if you stay on the lower deck. If you’re going to be leaving your bike on the street while you pop into a shop or cafe, invest in a good lock, or you might be walking home!

Rickshaws (or pedicabs) are a growing method of public transport and there are now around 500 rickshaw drivers who pedal you from one place to the next. They are safe and can transport two people at the same time. See www.manhattanrickshaw.com for more information on how to hail one off the street or book one for a special occasion.
