New York is a global hub for the publishing industry with some of the most famous newspapers and magazines in the world being published there. There are over 40 daily newspapers and over 300 consumer magazines in various languages. Tabloids and broadsheets are popular, and of course the commuter culture results in high newstand sales because, well, you’ve just got to have something to read on the subway. Many international news agencies have set up home in New York, and an estimated 10,000 journalists are based in the city.

Four major US newspapers are from New York: the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the New York Daily News and the New York Post. Some of the magazine giants in the city include Time Warner Publishing (Time, People, Sports Illustrated), Condé Nast (the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue) and the Hearst Corporation (Cosmopolitan, Esquire).

There are several ways to get your daily news fix: newspapers can be bought at paper stands found on almost every street, from vending machines, bookshops or subway stations. You can also subscribe to your favourite papers and magazines and have them delivered straight to your doorstep. The average price of a broadsheet (like the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times is $1.25, although Sunday editions can cost a bit more ($2.00). Bookshops and larger paper stands sell international and foreign language newspapers and magazines.
