General Information » Facts & Figures » Public Holidays

Public holidays here are based on either Christian construct (Christmas, Easter and St Patrick’s Day among the more celebrated) as well as patriotic anniversaries such as Independence Day and the Thanksgiving Day parade, general patriotism with Dominican Day (celebrating the heritage of the Dominican Republic), the Puerto Rican Day Parade and West Indian Day Carnival Parade, which falls on the same weekend as Labour Day, among others. There are a couple of out-there, just-for-the-fun-of-it days like Gay Pride (a lot of fun, whatever your orientation), Groundhog Day and, of course, the world-famous Halloween Parade.

Just because it’s a holiday doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a holiday. Public and government bodies as well as banks are more likely to be closed during religious holidays as well as a few of the other (more general) patriotic anniversaries. But the Private sector is more than likely to be toiling away through many of these, with workers joining in the fun after having punched in a full day’s slog.
