General Information » Facts & Figures » Population

The current recipe of the city’s culture and population is an amalgamation drawn from a deep historical well. One-third of the people here can trace their lineage back to Europe, Hispanic immigrants make up another third and African-Americans account for a quarter of the population.

The ‘Asian invasion’ is said to be the fastest-growing component towards New York’s immigration count, making up for almost one-tenth of the final figure.

The 20th century also saw a vast stream of Dominicans, Russians and Chinese relocating to New York. As a result, the New York of today is a complex stew of nationalities, ethnicities, religions and colours – it’s what makes this place incredible – so tuck in and enjoy.

The last official census was conducted in 2000, with the next one scheduled for 2010. The 2000 census put the population of New York City at 8,008,278. The 2005 update put the population at 8,213,839. Staten Island had the largest increase in population (7.1%). Manhattan came in second with a 4.5% increase.
