It’s one of the fashion capitals of the world and one of the best places to try out your ‘anything goes’ style experiments. Nothing is off limits, and nobody stares - New York is the land of the fashion-free!

Obviously if you are attending a religious service in a temple, church or mosque, it’s only respectful to stick to conservative attire. Some restaurants have smart dress codes, and some venues may have wacky dress codes (Like The Eagle, p.430, which insists on leather on certain nights of the week).

Your greatest challenge will be dressing appropriately for the weather, which can change in an instant. Sometimes air conditioning can be a bit aggressive, especially in cinemas and on the subway during summer, so an emergency cardigan may come in handy.
