Endearingly referred to as ‘New York’s finest’, the NYPD (New York Police Department) has come on leaps and bounds in an attempt to shirk some ugly stereotypes and generalisations such as corruption, racism and idleness. The NYPD has a history as colourful as the city itself and you can find out more at the New York City Police Museum (www.nycpolicemuseum.org).

On the whole, NYPD officers are vigilant and happy to help, whether you’re lost and just need directions or if you have a genuine emergency. Dressed in dark blue uniforms and characteristic hats, you’ll see police officers on almost every street corner, and even on the subway, which is now part of their patrol. They are armed and take their role seriously, aiming to make the city as safe as possible while still maintaining a friendly demeanour. The official website has lots of useful information, including details of all NYPD precincts, contact information, safety tips and some scary ‘most wanted’ photographs (www.nyc.gov/html/nypd).
