Just as New York is the place where anyone is welcome, so is it the place where any religion is tolerated. At the start of its history, there was a predominant Roman Catholic population, thanks to the large number of Irish immigrants. Not long after, however, a large Jewish community started forming, and exists to this day.

Today, no one denomination or religion takes precedence. Whatever you believe in, you are free to practise your religion and the city has an exhaustive list of churches, temples, mosques and synagogues.
