XXX L 4 XXX Restaurant WeekXXX January and June (check local press for details) XXX
Foodies on a budget wait anxiously for this event, which takes place during summer and winter each year. The city’s finest restaurants serve their most lip-smacking specialities for just a fraction of the usual price. Over 150 restaurants are involved, including culinary greats such as Aureole (p.375), Nobu (p.395) and Union Square Cafe (p.379). Prices do go up a little bit each year, but you’re looking at around $24 for the lunch menu and $35 for the dinner menu. It’s a great way to sample food prepared by the city’s top chefs without having to remortgage your home. Keep your eyes peeled on the local press for details, and make your reservations early!
XXX L 4 XXXThree Kings Parade
XXXX 6th JanuaryXXX www.elmuseo.org
This cultural festival celebrates one of the most important days in the Latin American calendar – the day the three kings visited baby Jesus. The streets of Spanish Harlem are filled with adults, children and a variety of barnyard animals, accompanied by street music and a festive atmosphere. Prominent Latino figures dress up to play the three kings. The parade departs from 106th Street, just off Fifth Avenue.
XXX L 4 XXX Chinese New Year
XXXX January – March (Dates depend on lunar calandar)XXX
The awesome Dragon Parade is only a small part of the celebrations – it is a period of fireworks, parades, dancing unicorns and other far eastern delights. Hang out at Mott and Bayard Street at noon and Market Street and East Broadway at 14:00 on the first day of the event to see some great firecracker displays, supposedly intended to ward off evil spirits.
XXX L 4 XXX New York Fashion Week
XXX February & September XXX
Twice a year the glitterati descends on New York in a frenzied torrent of tutus and cashmere, and twice a year the great city plays good host to these gurus of style for one whole week (actually eight days, from Friday to the following Friday) at a time. Bryant Park is converted into a temporary fashion arena complete with runways, lounges and air-conditioned tents. Limo-loads of celebrities turn out to drool over next seasons ‘must-haves’.
XXX L 4 XXX Empire State Building Run-Up
