From the sky-high views and the great bars to the gothic architecture and the tangible energy, there's plenty to love about New York.

Does New York need introducing? Not really – you’ve seen it in countless movies and TV shows, splashed across magazine spreads and featured in works of art. In fact you could say that even if you’ve never been there, you’ll feel like you have because everything is just so familiar.

It’s the largest city in America, and one of the largest in the world, with a population of over eight million. Thanks to some much-needed reforms in the late 80s and early 90s, it’s also the safest city in the US.

Although it is most famous for its many skyscrapers, this city of islands also has around 578 miles of waterfront, including 14 miles of public beach.

New York is the undisputed centre of American media, with two national newspapers, all four major American television networks, a dozen cable networks, and several film studios based in town. Hundreds of museums, art galleries and performance venues flourish.

An exceptionally diverse population has its benefits – you can get just about anything you need from anywhere in the world, at any time in New York. Certain areas of the city house concentrated populations of certain nationalities – areas like Chinatown, Little Italy and Spanish Harlem need no further explanation, but you will stumble upon other areas, such as East 32nd street in Midtown which is fast becoming New York’s very own ‘Koreatown’. A stroll through any of these areas will provide shopping and eating experiences that are as authentic as they are colourful.
