Most shops, restaurants and hotels will accept payment by credit or debit cards – look out for a sign displayed in the window or at the desk or till. In an attempt to prevent fraud and misuse of cards, a new protection system has been introduced called ’chip and pin’, where you type your card’s pin number into a handheld machine rather than sign for your purchase.

The increase in ATMs has meant travellers’ cheques are now slightly out of fashion, but they are still changed at banks, post offices, hotels and bureaux de change. The most commonly accepted are American Express, Visa and Thomas Cook, and cheques issued are likely to be one of these three brands.
