Overland trains are useful for reaching places that are not served by the tube. There are a number of overland lines that cross the capital, including the North London Line, which runs from Richmond in the west to Woolwich in the east, and Thameslink, which runs from Brighton on the south coast through to Bedford, via London Bridge and King’s Cross. These services tend to be less regular than the tube and some are not covered by the Oyster card system (see p.34). For more information on timetables and routes see www.tfl.gov.uk/rail.

Mainline stations that offer services to other parts of the country include Waterloo, London Bridge and Victoria, which serve south and south-east England; Paddington, which serves the west and south-west; King’s Cross, St Pancras and Euston, which serve the north; and Liverpool Street, which serves the east. Tickets must be bought before boarding; with longer journeys, the further you book in advance, the cheaper the ticket. See www.thetrainline.com for more information.
