If the worst happens, dial 999 to call the police (free from any phone). This number will also put you in touch with the fire or ambulance services. To report non-urgent crime, contact your local police station.

In case of an accident, most major hospitals have 24 hour Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments (see p.20). Free emergency treatment is open to EU nationals, nationals of non-EU European countries upon production of a passport, and UK residents of over 12 months. NHS Direct is a confidential 24 hour helpline and website available to anyone to help diagnose medical complaints. Call to speak to a nurse for advice at any time of day or night, or see www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk.
