Old world charm and burgeoning skylines combine to create a unique capital with a cultural mix as diverse and impressive as its many attractions.

People who live in London would argue that the city is not entirely representative of the rest of England – that it’s more of an entity unto itself. It’s understandable – the 21st century London is a vibrant, multicultural metropolis with an enviable infrastructure, and it has more in common with New York all the way over the Atlantic than it does with York, a city just 280km up the road.

Scratch the surface a little, however, and it quickly becomes apparent that this ‘new’ London is merely an extension that sits comfortably alongside, without overshadowing, the old. ‘Old’ London is the home of Big Ben and Piccadilly Circus, the royal family and red double-decker buses. But it is also a heritage that stretches back over thousands of years, with a history that incorporates groundbreaking architecture, literary masterminds, the black plague, anti-government plots, raging fires, great sporting achievements, war, rapid expansion and world domination.

This colourful history is one of the most powerful attractions about London, and a primary reason why this essential city is at the top of so many travellers’ to-do lists. However, the powerful iconography of the cityscape is also to be thanked for capturing the imagination of hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. From the pomp of Buckingham Palace to the ceremony of the Houses of Parliament, there’s plenty to fuel the stereotype that once upon a time London was populated largely by a haughty collection of politicians, royalty and hangers-on. But mix in the joyful playfulness of the the city’s new architectural wonders – the giant observation wheel, the London Eye, is possibly the winning example – and you’ve got the London of today, where traditionalism and modernism co-exist in a unique blend which gives the city a tangible character that can’t be matched in other cities.
