The excellent landline telephone service in Kuwait is provided by the Ministry of Communication. All local calls are free. An international line will require a substantial deposit, usually KD 500. To avoid having to pay this deposit, an alternative is to use a phone card when making international calls. Sold in various denominations at corner shops and supermarkets, these cards can only be used on telephones with tone dialing. Phone boxes are not easily accessible. Should you need to make a local call, most shops will allow you the use of their phone for a minute or two. Hotels add their usual percentage onto any calls made.
