Kuwait is investing large amounts of capital in major commercial, residential, and tourism projects. The top development ventures are listed below. Additional projects in the planning stage include a 1,100 bed hospital in South Surra, a national library, a cardiac hospital, a dedicated maternity hospital and a number of major facilities for the oil industry and government organisations.

360° Kuwait

Proposed for completion in 2007, 360° Kuwait will be a huge circular shopping mall with an impressive 59,000 square metres of retail space to be anchored by a large hypermarket and two well-known department stores. Leisure facilities such as a 15 screen cinema with an IMAX theatre, a bowling alley and plenty of restaurants will share the space. It will be located at the intersection of King Faisal Highway and the 6th Ring Road.

Al Khiran Pearl City

Work has begun on phase one of this US$138 million development. Located adjacent to the Saudi border, the 6,500 hectare project will be developed in a number of stages and will ultimately be home to 50,000 residents.

Bubiyan Island Port

Feasibility studies are under way as part of the project to build a container port on the 530 square-kilometre island. The development of the port is expected to progress over a period of 20 years, at an estimated cost of over US$1 billion.

Failaka Island Project

There are plans to develop Failaka Island into a multi-billion-dollar tourist attraction. The project would comprise a complete holiday resort with accommodation and entertainment facilities. Construction is expected to take up to ten years and will cost up to US$3 billion.

Golf Course

A 6,600 yard, par 70 golf course is currently being completed at the Hunting & Equestrian Club off the 6th Ring Road, with thirteen of the 18 holes located within the race track. The result will be a challenging, contoured course with three lakes, 12m high hills and over 5,000 trees. Facilities will include a clubhouse, pro-shop, spa, health club, restaurants, a driving range and a golf academy.

Gulf University for Science & Technology

(GUST)

The Gulf University is scheduled to open in 2006. Located on a 10 hectare site in Mishref, the long-term plan is to accommodate 5,500 students. The Community Development & Training Centre will hold a 500-seat auditorium and a 200 seat lecture hall in addition to exhibition and conference spaces.

Heritage Village

This 40 storey commercial tower, five-storey mall and 1,400 bay carpark will be located in Sharq. Cinema and entertainment facilities will also be available. The project is valued at US$155 million and is due for completion at the end ...
