General Information » Places To Stay » Campsites

If you’re invited to join friends camping, don’t rush out to buy a tent just yet. Locally, ‘camping’ means heading out of the city, but staying in a rented flat with air-conditioning, bathroom, etc. Camping in tents is called ‘wild camping’.

Where to go for your wild camp? The government lists 37 approved camping sites, but it is unlikely anyone will complain if you pitch your tent in remote areas. A popular ‘unofficial’ site is Tai Long Wan, in the northeast New Territories, Hong Kong’s most beautiful beach. Many people choose to camp right on the sand, though the best site is on a low headland that divides the bay into the two main beaches.

Winter is the best season for camping – there is less chance of rain and fewer mozzies – and the temperature is more comfortable. In general, expect to bring your own food and water, though at Tai Long Wan there are a couple of small stores that sell drinks and cooked food.
