Hong Kong’s most famous transport link is the venerable Star Ferry, which sloshes back and forth between Hong Kong island and Kowloon in just about 10 minutes. You will take the Star Ferry if you visit Hong Kong – simple as that. But less picturesque – and much faster – ferries play a big part in Hong Kong’s overall transport scheme, with multiple routes connecting the inhabited outlying islands, and a few spots in the New Territories, with the city. Most ferries these days are ‘fast’ ones, with fully enclosed, air-conditioned cabins, but some routes still mix in older ‘slow’ ferries with open decks that can be very pleasant for seeing a different face of Hong Kong.
