If you come to Hong Kong expecting to see rivers of elegant black bicycles like the ones that flow through some other Chinese cities, you’re in for a rude shock. Hong Kong must be one of the world’s worst cities for bikers. It’s true that recreational cyclists are relatively common in the New Towns, as cycle-paths were part of the towns’ design, and a few riders also brave rural roads at weekends. In Kowloon and Hong Kong however, the only cyclists you’ll see are delivery men. Dressed in shorts, vest and flip-flops, a heavy load (even an entire pig carcass) dangling from their handlebars, they seem oblivious of the fact they’re usually cycling the wrong way down a busy main road.
